2 Samuel 6:7 "And the
anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his
error; and there he died by the ark of God."
When the punishment doesn’t
fit the crime, it offends our sense of justice. An angry character who
overreacts out of emotion escalates the conflict.
When a misdeed is done
innocently, but the punishment is severe, the innocent is now the wronged
person and likely to overreact out of her outrage. A story can only go on so
long this way before it becomes ridiculous.
Ruthless editing will be
called for, if this story is ever to find a publisher or readers. One character
will have to call a halt to the vengeance.
