Writer Dwight Swain is the
one who identified MRUs. It stands for Motive Response Units and a complete story should consist of a series of MRUs.
The motive is what happens
objectively in the story—something anyone would experience, for instance a
queen’s refusal. The response component has three parts.
The first reaction would
be emotional—for instance anger, followed by the second reaction which is
instinct or training. The final response is the character’s action or thoughts.
