Mystery stories seek to
uncover the truth. Usually, the story involves the committing of a crime and
the steps the characters take to reveal who the criminal is.
Often it involves murder,
at least in adult stories. Children’s mysteries involve less violence,
depending on the age of the target market.
If the protagonist who solves the crime is not a professional—police, private detective, FBI, etc.—the story is categorized as a cozy. Other mysteries are categorized by the professional who solves the crime, for instance police procedurals.
